A New Era of Education Leadership Begins

A New Phase of FAFSA Support Strategy Launched

Former Los Angeles Unified School District Superintendent Miguel Cardona was sworn in as the 12th U.S. Secretary of Education on March 2, 2021. His appointment marks a significant shift in the leadership of the Department of Education, bringing a wealth of experience and a deep commitment to equity and access to the role. As Secretary, Cardona oversees the overall direction, supervision, and coordination of all Department of Education activities, including the implementation of federal education laws and policies.

In a recent move to address the challenges faced by students in accessing higher education, the Department of Education has launched the next phase of its FAFSA Support Strategy. This strategy aims to increase the completion rate of the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) among high school seniors. The FAFSA is essential for students to qualify for federal and state financial aid, but many students face barriers in completing the application.

The new phase of the FAFSA Support Strategy includes a range of initiatives designed to streamline the application process, provide targeted assistance to students, and increase outreach to underrepresented communities. These initiatives include:

  • Simplifying the FAFSA application form
  • Providing online and in-person support to students and families
  • Partnering with schools and community organizations to reach underserved students

By implementing these initiatives, the Department of Education aims to remove barriers to college access and ensure that all students have the opportunity to pursue higher education.
